Spanish Lessons & Curriculum for Kids!

Course Syllabus, Spanish Basics (Level 2)

 

Spanish Basics, Level 2 will focus on 10 additional lessons that build upon the lessons covered in Spanish Basics, Level 1. Only students who have completed Level 1, or who have had at least 1 full year of Spanish, should enroll in this course. If you're not sure if this course is appropriate for your child, please contact me. As with Level 1, it is entirely normal, if not encouraged, for students to repeat Level 2 up to three times for maximum retention! 

IMPORTANT! Lesson pace is based on teacher discretion and in some cases, not all content from the following lessons will not be covered. Lessons will be supplemented with additional activities and exercises such as verbal presentations, holiday and cultural activities, learning songs, mini-plays or small skits.

By the end of the course students will have a basic understanding of the following lessons:

Lesson 2 - "La Ciudad" y "Mis Pasatiempos"

Lesson 3 - Introduction to "TENER" & Possessive Adjectives
Lesson 4 - Diving into "SER"
Lesson 5 - Introduction to "HACER" & Animals of the Rainforest
Lesson 6 - I am "ESTAR" & Introduction to the Present Progressive
Lesson 7 - Introduction to "PODER" & Understanding "GUSTAR"
Lesson 8 - Introduction to Prepositions of Place & Clothing
Lesson 9 - Introduction to Affirmative Tú Commands & Reflexive Verbs
Lesson 10 - Putting it All Together

 

Methods of Instruction:

Throughout this course, students will use a proprietary, age-appropriate Mi Camino "Spanish Basics" workbook. Course content will be delivered through verbal introduction and review, drills, role-playing, games, learning-based videos, and written exercises that include age appropriate puzzles, Q&A, fill-in-the-blank, coloring or drawing. Typically I do no assign homework unless it is requested by parents based on individual learning goals.

 

Absences & Refunds:

 

Students will be allowed to participate in the first class free of charge. Should you decide that you would like your child to continue with the course, payment in full at the start of the next scheduled class is required. There will be no refunds for missed classes. If I should need to cancel a class due to illness or another unforeseen emergency, I will attempt to find a qualified substitute. If a class needs to be canceled, I will schedule a make-up class as soon as possible.

Lesson 1 - "Mi Casa es Su Casa"

By the end of this lesson your child should be able to:

  • Use vocabulary related to common rooms found in a home

  • Use vocabulary to describe common items found in each room of a home

  • Describe his/her own home

  • ​Use common verbs to describe the things we typically do in each room of a home   

Lesson 2 - "La Ciudad" y "Mis Pasatiempos"

By the end of this lesson your child should be able to:

  • Use vocabulary related to common things found in a city

  • Describe the different type of people we find in a city

  • Use common verbs to describe the types of things people typically do in a city

  • Use vocabulary to describe common pastimes, hobbies and sports

  • ​Use common verbs to describe the things we like to do during free time 

 

Lesson 3 - Introduction to "TENER" & Possessive Adjectives  

 

By the end of this lesson your child should be able to:

  • Use the verb “TENER” with common Spanish expressions like,

    • TENER Sueño (to be tired)

    • TENER Calor (to be hot)

    • TENER Hambre (to be hungry)

    • TENER Frío (to be cold)

    • TENER Miedo (to be scared)

    • TENER Prisa (to be in a hurry)

    • TENER Razón (to be right)

    • TENER Suerte (to be lucky)

  • Answer the question, “¿Qué tienes en tu cuarto?” (What do you have in your room?)

  • Provide the Spanish vocabulary word for things that you have in your room​

 

In addition, for students in grades 3-5, they will also be able to:

  • Conjugate the verb “TENER” (to have) in the present tense

  • Use “TENER + que + infinitive” to describe what you have to do

  • Use common possessive adjectives in Spanish:

    • Mi / Mis (my)

    • Tu / Tus (your)

    • Su / Sus (his/her)

Lesson 2 - Diving into "SER"

By the end of this lesson your child should be able to:

  • Explain how the verb “SER” is used when:

    • Giving the time

    • Describing the calendar

    • Referring to a profession

    • Describing a nationality

    • Using colors or adjectives

    • Describing physical attributes

  • Use SER when answering the following questions:

    • “¿Qué hora es?”

    • “¿Qué día es?”

    • “¿De dónde es?”

    • “¿De qué color es?”

    • “¿Cómo es?”

  • Use new Spanish vocabulary related to professions

  • Use new Spanish vocabulary related to physical attributes 

 

In addition, for students in grades 3-5, they will also be able to:

  • Conjugate the verb “SER” (to be) in the present tense

 

Lesson 4 - Introduction to "HACER" & Animals of the Rainforest

 

By the end of this lesson your child should be able to:

  • Use the verb “HACER” with common Spanish phrases

    • ¿Qué tiempo hace? (What’s the weather like?)

    • Hace calor. (It is hot.)

    • Hace frío. (It is cold.)

    • Hace viento. (It is windy.)

    • Hace sol. (It is sunny.)

    • Hace mal tiempo. (It is bad weather.)

    • Hace buen tiempo. (It is good weather.)

  • Say the names of several animals of the rainforest in Spanish

  • Review the following verbs and use them in the present tense:

    • Caminar (to walk), saltar (to jump), nadar (to swim), volar (to fly), comer (to eat), correr (to run), beber (to drink), subir (to climb), vivir (to live), dormir (to sleep)

  • Answer the question, “¿Qué hacen los animales?” (What are the animals doing?)

  • Answer the question, “¿De qué color es?” (What color is it?) when describing what an animal of the rainforest looks like

 

In addition, for students in grades 3-5, they will also be able to:

  • Conjugate the verb “HACER” (to make or to do) in the present tense

  • Conjugate two irregular verbs in Spanish: DORMIR (to sleep) and VOLAR (to fly)

 

Lesson 5 - I am "ESTAR" & Introduction to the Present Progressive

 

By the end of this lesson your child should be able to:

  • Explain how the verb “ESTAR” is used

  • Explain how “ESTAR” is using under the following circumstances:

    • Using ESTAR to describe LOCATION and review location vocabulary from a previous lesson

    • Using ESTAR to describe MOODS and introduce new vocabulary like: bien (good), mal (bad), excelente (excellent), contento/a (happy), triste (sad), aburrido/a (bored), frustrado/a (frustrated), enojado/a (mad), furioso/a (furious), tranquilo/a (mellow)

    • Using ESTAR to describe TEMPORARY PHYSICAL CONDITIONS and introduce new vocabulary like: enfermo/a (sick), cansado/a (tired), sucio/a (dirty), frío/a (cold), limpio/a (clean), mojado/a (wet), seco/a (dry), abierto/a (open), cerrado/a (closed), caliente (hot)

  • Answer the question, “¿Qué estás haciendo?”

 

In addition, for students in grades 3-5, they will also be able to:

  • Conjugate the verb “ESTAR” (to be) in the present tense

  • Explain what a gerund is and how it is used, (the present progressive)

  • Review a long list of verbs and discuss how to turn these verbs into the gerund form of the verb

 

Lesson 6 - Introduction to "PODER" & Understanding "GUSTAR"

By the end of this lesson your child should be able to:

  • Use the verb “PODER” with common Spanish verbs in the infinitive

  • Answer the question, “¿Qué puedes hacer?” (What can you do?)

  • Use the verb “GUSTAR” to describe what you, (or someone else), like or don’t like to do

  • Use the verb “GUSTAR” in describing things or objects that you, (or someone else), like or don’t like and when it’s appropriate to use the following:

    • “ME GUSTA”

    • “ME GUSTAN”

    • “NO ME GUSTA”

    • “NO ME GUSTAN”

  • Answer the question, “¿Qué le gusta hacer?” (What does he/she like to do?)

In addition, for students in grades 3-5, they will also be able to:

  • Conjugate the verb “PODER” (to be able to) in the present tense

  • Conjugate the verb "GUSTAR" (to "like", to be pleasing) in the present tense

Lesson 7 - Introduction to Prepositions of Place & Clothing

 

By the end of this lesson your child should be able to:

  • Conjugate the verb “ESTAR” (to be) in the present tense

  • Explain what prepositions of place are

  • Use prepositions of place in Spanish like:

    • A la izquierda de (to the left of)

    • A la derecha de (to the right of)

    • Encima de (on top of)

    • Debajo de (underneath of)

    • Al lado de (to the side of)

    • Delante de / enfrente de (in front of)

    • Detrás de (in back of)

    • Entre (in between)

    • Adentro de (inside of)

    • Afuera de (outside of)

  • Describe where something or someone is located using prepositions of place in Spanish

  • Use new Spanish vocabulary related to items of clothing

  • Answer the question, “¿Dónde está?” (Where is it?)

 

Lesson 8 - Introduction to Affirmative Tú Commands & Reflexive Verbs

 

By the end of this lesson your child should be able to:

  • Explain what an affirmative tú command is

  • Use verbs you already know in the affirmative tú command form​

  • Use common irregular verbs in the affirmative tú command form

  • ​Use new reflexive verbs to describe your daily routine

  • Demand, or politely suggest, that your family or friends “do” things in Spanish!     

 

Lesson 9 - "Mi Casa es Su Casa"

By the end of this lesson your child should be able to:

  • Use vocabulary related to common rooms found in a home

  • Use vocabulary to describe common items found in each room of a home

  • Describe his/her own home

  • ​Use common verbs to describe the things we typically do in each room of a home   

 

Lesson 10 - Putting it All Together

 

Lesson 8 gives students a chance to review vocabulary, grammar, and phrases from all previous lessons. This final lesson really gives students a chance to "put it all together" and see how much they have learned!
